four dimensional chess

The recently completed FRC round again took place on a 4x4x4x4 hypercube. Unlike the scrabble game however, this time there were moving pieces, sort of like chess pieces.

This got me thinking.

I think that an enjoyable competitive geek activity might be writing software to play 4-d chess. An annual tournement could be held.

The big questions are, what exactly are the rules? What exactly is the board?

Here are my draft thoughts.

The board is an 8x8x8x8 hypercube described as (1,1,1,1) through (8,8,8,8)

Either the standard chess pieces are all in a two rows at opposite ends, or there are lots more pieces and they take up a whole 8x8 plane just for the officers, or
maybe even a whole cube of them. Standard chess has a quarter of the board occupied by pawns -- maybe there could be a whole cube of officers and a whole cube of pawns?

That wasn't what I was planning on
writing when I started this entry, so
clearly there is room for discussion

and how about having multiple kings?
