potential freeswitch tricks

So I have added akismet support to TJGFH and it is effectivly blocking the comment form spam from the comment form below and such, for all users of the TJGFH.

I have been using freeswitch soft-switch as part of a component in an openmethods development project, and have a small too-much-coffee kind of feature request list to submit to the freeswitch MCFs. (Magic Coding Fairies)

  • streaming audio support. There could be a mod_streaming for instance that will tune into a streaming audio source such as a radio station and allow that source to get mixed into a conference, or played as music-on-hold
  • artsd replacement. X-windows has this crazy sound portability thing where if you have it set up right, sounds from the applications running on the remote boxes emerge from the speakers on yours. This could be somehow added into the softswitch. Or layered beneath it. Present the sound device to the softswitch as a channel. Currently the portaudio module presents a dialplan interface for the sound card, I'm talking about presenting a sound card device for the soft switch, possibly with socket endpoint data available for mixing and routing. This would allow the noises made on my remote machines, that are currently not appearing on my speakers because I don't have ARTs set up right, to appear on my desk phone.
  • intercom support as a sound device. Currently linux and bsd both offer "pcaudio" as a sound device, that is, a sound driver that uses the pc speaker instead of a sound card for crazy low-fi limping. One slight step up from that, given a pbx that supports intercom functionality, would be to send sounds to the intercom. This may be the same thing as the previous one. One use case for this would be to make system error and notification beeps come from my desk speakerphone instead of going nowhere (due to lack of arts config and/or speakers) This would be in the form of a small process that monitors a fifo that would be identified to the application in question as the preferred sound device. The process, when there is action on the fifo, would call the intercom number and stream the sound.

FreeSwitch project

the above was entered 2007-Feb-15; I am adding this bit in October

  • mod_stream became available, I think Mr. Minessale just got out his endless supply of virtual test leads and clipped together a couple pieces of virtual copper that had been until that point simply staring at each other with helpless longing, as it were, in march or april.
  • nobody cares about artsd. Please prove me wrong.
  • After writing this blog entry I successfully wrote a program that could be used as the audio driving program in GAIM (now Pidgin) so that whenever I had the system running and someone would hail me on IM (or my name would get mentioned in an IRC channel I was monitoring) a noise would emerge from my desk phone (in intercom mode.)
