the street performer paradigm

I did not realize, until Ellen was telling me about a piece she heard on the radio about the street performer paradigm being applied to open-source
software development, that not everyone is familiar with the term.

Some street performers are content to sit and play, with their music cases open, collecting encouraging tips. That is a passive street performer. The active street performer approach is to maybe do one or two tricks to demonstrate your skills, but withhold your complete show until you have
received some earnest money from your crowd. This is more difficult to do,pays better, and is taught in street performing classes.

The Tipjar Exchange project, when it is going, will facilitate development of software using the street performer model, as well as facilitating other industry that it may facilitate as well.

As an escrow service, TipJar can be a neutral third party which holds funds paid in to fund developers working on projects under this model. When many customers would share the burden of development of a project, TipJar can take care of the complexity of collecting from and communicating with all the sponsors.
